The best Ben Youssef Madrasa tour depends on what you want from the guide. For the building alone, a one-hour madrasa visit is enough. For the walk through the souks and a second monument, a half-day medina tour from about €10 is better value. Either way, check one thing: most tours leave out the entry ticket, so you pay 50 MAD at the door as well.

In short

  • Medina walks with the madrasa: from about €10, entry fees extra.
  • The madrasa alone with a guide: about €26 for one hour, entry extra.
  • Entry tickets included: two tours, from about €49, with Bahia Palace too.
  • Going alone: 50 MAD at the door, 15–20 minutes’ walk from Jemaa el-Fna.

How to read a tour listing

Look at the exclusions, not the title. A tour can be called “Ben Youssef Madrasa tour” and still leave the ticket out. On each card we show one of two labels:

  • Madrasa ticket included: nothing to pay at the door.
  • Madrasa ticket paid on site: you buy it yourself at the entrance, in dirhams.

We leave out tours that include a stop at a herbalist, a “Berber pharmacy” or a carpet shop: those stops are sales visits, and they take time away from the monuments.

Madrasa only, or a half-day medina tour?

A madrasa-only visit suits you if you are happy to find your own way and want the building explained properly. A medina tour adds the walk through the souks, often with Bahia Palace, the Koutoubia or Le Jardin Secret, and solves the navigation problem. It is the better choice on a first visit to Marrakech.

Group sizes vary a lot: some cheap walks take up to 30 people, others cap groups at 10 to 15. Private options cost more but let you set the pace, and some include pickup at your riad.

Languages

Most guides speak English and French; several also speak Arabic, and some Spanish. If you want a guide in Italian, we list one tour that offers it. German-speaking guides are rarer on the platforms; a private tour or your riad is the best route.

Is a tour worth it?

If the souks make you nervous, yes: the guide meets you near Jemaa el-Fna, walks you through and keeps the touts away. If you are confident with an offline map, go alone and use our room-by-room guide inside. Either way, avoid the “unofficial guides” who approach you in the alleys: see our mistakes page.

Questions people ask

Do Ben Youssef Madrasa tours include the entry ticket?

Most don’t: you pay the 50 MAD entry at the door on top of the tour. A few include it; we mark each offer.

Is a guide worth it at the Ben Youssef Madrasa?

For the building alone, not essential. A guide is most useful for the walk through the souks, for keeping touts away and for explaining the inscriptions.

How long is a Ben Youssef Madrasa tour?

A madrasa-only visit takes about 1 hour. Medina tours that add Bahia Palace or Le Jardin Secret take 3 to 4 hours.
